Reading the quotation
S&P 500 Index is read as an index level. Compare its percentage movement over the same period with other benchmarks; different starting levels do not measure the relative size or value of their markets.
S&P 500 is expressed in index points. A higher level represents an increase in the index, while a lower level represents a decrease. A point change and a percentage change describe different quantities.
Before trading
When following S&P 500, keep the observation time and selected chart interval consistent. An index level is distinct from the price and order size of a contract linked to that index.
